Sodium chloride (NaCl), commonly known as salt, is one of the most abundant minerals on earth and is an essential nutrient for many animals and plants. It is found naturally in seawater and groundwater rocks.

Sodium chloride (NaCl), also known as salt, is an important compound used by our body:

Unprocessed fresh vegetables, legumes, and fruits naturally obtain sodium. Baking soda also contains sodium. The weight of salt is usually 40 percent sodium and 60 percent chloride.

Sodium chloride is used as table salt or common salt for household purposes and is an important component of our diet.

The most common use of salt in food is. Its uses include:

  • 1.  Food seasoning

  • 3.  Improves the natural color of foods
  • 4.  Treat or preserve meat
  • 5.  creating brine pickles for food

It is used in the manufacture of sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide.

Sodium chloride is used in a cold mixture.

It is also used to salt soap.

There are also several types of domestic use, such as:

  • 2. Prevents mold
  • 3. Removes stains and grease
  • 4. Roads are salted in winter to prevent snow.


How is sodium chloride prepared?

We all know that seawater is the main source of sodium chloride. Seawater contains 2.7–2.9% sodium chloride. It is also known as mango salt.

In tropical countries like India, this can usually be achieved by evaporation of seawater. India produces about 5 million tonnes of salt per year through solar evaporation. Evaporation of seawater usually provides raw sodium chloride, which usually contains impurities of calcium sulfate, sodium sulfate, calcium chloride, and magnesium chloride. It is considered waste as it easily absorbs moisture from the atmosphere due to its presence in the atmosphere. Now for the purification of this raw salt, it is dissolved in a small amount of water and filtered to remove insoluble impurities. HCL gas passes through the solution to obtain a saturated solution of salt. The normal ions between HCl and NaCl crystals of pure sodium chloride decompose under the influence. The salts of calcium and magnesium chloride remain in solution only because they are more soluble in water. Therefore, pure sodium chloride is obtained.

Multi-effect vacuum evaporation also treats saltwater. The device consists of three or more closed metal drums with an angled base. Brine is chemically processed to remove calcium and magnesium impurities. It is then filled under the metal drums. The saltwater in the first cylinder passes through the heated tubes. When the saltwater is heated it boils and its steam comes to the next drum, so the process continues. The internal pressure in each cylinder decreases because the condensate vapor allows the brine to boil at a much lower temperature. The salt is extracted from the bottom of the drum in the form of a dense solution. It is filtered to distribute the excess saltwater through the screen to sort out the dry and shaped particles.


What are the properties of Sodium Chloride?

  • 1. Sodium chloride is a white crystalline solid.
  • 2. Sodium chloride has no odor but tastes good.
  • 3.The melting point of sodium chloride is 1081 K (801 C) and the boiling point is 1713 K (1413 C).
  • 4. Sodium chloride is water-soluble and its solubility is 27 g to 36 g per 100 g of water but is partially soluble or insoluble in other liquids.
  • 5. Pure sodium chloride is considered non-hygroscopic but acts hygroscopic ally due to impurities of calcium and magnesium chloride.
  • 6. In the aqueous state, NaCl acts as a good conductor of electricity due to the free movement of ions.

Sodium chloride is considered a special ionic compound. Such compounds have a large (infinitely repetitive) lattice of ions. Sodium chloride (any other ionic compound) is therefore described as having a large ionic structure.
